Vice President NAKAHASHI appointed as Chair of the International Forum for Aviation Research (IFAR) at the 6th IFAR Summit 2015

The 6th annual meeting of the International Forum for Aviation Research (IFAR), the 6th IFAR Summit 2015, was held at the NASA Ames Research Center in California, USA, from October 6 to 8, 2015, with the participation of 21 (out of total 26) IFAR member institutions.

Bringing together global aviation leaders of public research organizations from around the world, top aeronautics executives exchanged their views on current progress and future directions for technical collaboration under the IFAR. These included the environmental impacts of aviation, research into alternative fuels, developing a global approach to air traffic management, and sonic boom reduction for supersonic aircraft. Another feature is participation of young researchers. Young Researchers Conference was held in parallel with the Summit, and 18 young researchers from 6 countries exchanged their views on the “game changer” technologies in aviation in the future. At the closing, the position of IFAR Chair was approved to be taken over, from Jaiwon Shin, NASA Associate Administrator for the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, to NAKAHASHI Kazuhiro , former IFAR Vice-Chair and Director General of the JAXA Aviation Technology Directorate.

During its 2-year term as IFAR Chair, JAXA will take a leadership role in managing the IFAR in close cooperation with newly-appointed Vice-Chair Michel Peters of the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) in order to oversee operations for the further growth of IFAR.

The next summit will be held in autumn 2016 in Daejeon, South Korea, hosted by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).
