The 7th IFAR Summit 2016 held in Daejeon, South Korea

From September 27 to September 29, 2016, the 7th IFAR (International Forum for Aviation Research) Summit was held in Daejeon, South Korea, hostedby the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). In attendance were representatives from 18 of the 26 IFAR member institutions, including JAXA (the IFAR Chair), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA; USA), the German Aerospace Center (DLR; Germany), the Central Aerohydronamic Institute (TsAGI; Russia), and the Chinese Aeronautical Establishment (CAE; China).

The IFAR Summit serves as a valuable, active forum for members to meet face to face once a year. Participants discussed ideas and exchanged views on a variety of common interests, ranging from management-related issues, such as how to attract future talents who can lead future aviation, to technological topics for possible collaboration.

Technical sessions included presentations by 15 member institutions on the latest trends in research and development, with a focus session on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) as a highlight. Following reports on legal, infrastructural, and research and development-related conditions in various countries, IFAR members discussed technical challenges on UAS together with possible collaborations in the future. The IFAR members agreed to continue exchanging opinions on UAS.

The 8th IFAR Summit is to be held in October 2017 in South Africa hosted by the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). JAXA will continue serving as IFAR Chair for another round, facilitating mutually beneficial collaboration among the IFAR member community.
