Wake turbulence measurement campaign at Narita Airport in January and February 2014

From January 8 to February 14, 2014, JAXA conducted the measurement of the aircraft wake turbulence during take-off and landing at the Narita International Airport.
A wake turbulence measurement system was installed in the vicinity of the airport. The system consisted of a wind measurement LIDAR that can detect wake turbulence using lasers, an automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) receiver that can receive the information on aircraft position and speed, monitoring cameras, etc. To date, we’ve measured thewake turbulence of about 2,500 aircraft, including the previous campaign in November 2013.
Based on the obtained data, we are working on to improve the prediction accuracy of the system, while looking into the validity of calculated aircraft takeoffs and landings separations based upon the prediction (that is, to examining whether any wake turbulence remained or not as predicted and calculated by the system).
