The Metamorphic Lavatory wins the iF DESIGN AWARD 2025
On February 26, 2025, the Metamorphic Lavatory, proposed by JAXA and JAMCO Corporation, was awarded the iF DESIGN AWARD 2025, one of the world’s most prestigious design awards.
Organized by Germany-based iF International Forum Design, the award highlights the global importance of design, its social relevance and influence, and aims to encourage innovation for a better future. The iF DESIGN AWARD has been given as a symbol of outstanding design over 70 years. This year, the competition received more than 11,000 entries from 66 countries. The Metamorphic Lavatory impressed the international jury of 131 independent design professionals. In particular, the "idea" behind this concept was highly praised.
The Metamorphic Lavatory is the concept of an expandable, accessible aircraft lavatory that efficiently uses limited cabin space. While passengers who require full assistance are unable to use current aircraft lavatories due to cramped space, this design allows them to be accompanied by caregivers, offering the same accessibility as on the ground. The concept is also designed to accommodate infants, children with developmental disabilities, and ostomates, ensuring inclusion.
