The Metamorphic Lavatory wins Gold in the IAUD International Design Award 2024

On February 28, 2025, the Metamorphic Lavatory, proposed by JAXA and JAMCO Corporation, was awarded Gold in the category of “Imaging the Future” in the IAUD International Design Award 2024 by the International Association for Universal Design.

The IAUD International Design Award is an award focused on universal design, granted to groups and individuals who have conducted or proposed particularly noteworthy activities aimed at realizing a universal design society in which everyone can live comfortably without feeling any undue inconvenience.

The Metamorphic Lavatory is the concept of an expandable, accessible aircraft lavatory that efficiently uses limited cabin space. While passengers who require full assistance are unable to use current aircraft lavatories due to cramped space, this design allows them to be accompanied by caregivers, offering the same accessibility as on the ground. The concept is also designed to accommodate infants, children with developmental disabilities, and ostomates, ensuring inclusion.
