Research & Development

JAXA promotes three research and development programs and a fundamental research program that underpins them.

Exploratory research

We conduct exploratory research to identify innovative seeds for future research and development programs.

Research on hypersonic turbojet engine

JAXA has been promoting research and development to establish technologies for a Mach 5 class hypersonic passenger aircraft that can cross the Pacific Ocean in 2 hours. To date, we have successfully conducted a series of combustion experiments for a hypersonic pre-cooled turbojet engine simulating Mach 4 flight conditions on the ground. Currently, we are working with Japanese universities to advance studies on Mach-5 class hypersonic passenger aircraft, such as studies on aerodynamic designs by wind tunnel tests and numerical simulations, as well as research on heat resistance design and analysis of flight trajectory. Ongoing efforts also include elemental technologies to supply liquid hydrogen fuel efficiently to engine.
